Remote Administration
In order to access your server system from another computer, you will need to have an IP address for both systems. Remote administration requires TCP/IP connection and I will assume you are able to get an IP address for each of your computers.

We need to open up the Remote Desktop port on the server computer for remote administration. Windows XP Profession SP2s firewall is quite adequate for most users, and I really do not see a need to install a third party firewall. Many of the issues that some critics complain about WinXPs firewall before was addressed in SP2, so you do not have to worry too much about the firewall. If anything, I find third party firewalls way too intrusive on the system.

To open the remote administration port on the server:

In the Control Panel, open up Network Connections.
Right click Local Area Connection (or whatever it is for your LAN) and select Properties.
Click on the Advanced Tab.
Click on Settings in the Advanced Tab.
Ensure that the Windows Firewall is On in the General tab.
Click on the Exceptions tab.
Look for Remote Desktop and check it.
Click OK and close all windows.
Turn on Remote Desktop:

In the Control Panel, click on System.
Click on the Remote tab.
In the Remote Desktop group, check Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. (You should also uncheck the box for Remote Assistant.)
Click OK and close all windows.
Administrator accounts on the server have automatic remote administration access. Make sure that the account you want to log into the server as is a passworded, administrator account.

To connect to the remote server from your main system:

Click on the Start menu, then All Programs, Accessories, Communications, and select Remote Desktop Connection.
Enter in the IP address of the server in combo box (drop down list).
Press Connect.
If you have set up everything properly, there should be a log in screen for you to enter in your username and password.
Now you are in full control of the server remotely.
