hello,
we are tapping 356 aluminium castings blind holes abt an inch deep with M12x 1.75 taps, size of hole is 10.3mm, we use tapping attachment as our HMC does not have rigid tapping option- control fanuc 6mb.
The problem is we are unable to control the depth of tap and the tap hits the bottom of the hole and breaks and some times the tap with the tap holder along gets stuck with the job while the tapping chuck is retained in the spindle.

RPM- 500, tap- HSS machine tap
This problem does not occcur when tapping thru holes.
any suggestions
thanks

This is a little late, but here is my 2 cents worth:

I think on that control, a tapping cycle, is supposed to go past the depth that you specify.

So when it is not a through hole, you need to specify a depth that is less. Not sure exactly what that "less" is though.

If you found an answer, please update this thread, so we can all learn. Wink
