I found the following on their web site.

==============================================

SmartCAM software was developed in the 80s by an outfit called Point Control Company. It was such a hit that in the mid-90s the sharks gobbled it up. Over an 8-year span, SmartCAM was the target of four corporate acquisitions.

Been there? Then you know what happened: the smart guys did not realize what they bought. So, they cut development, zeroed out marketing, broke up the staff, and, finally, mothballed SmartCAM.

Only, SmartCAM had two attributes that were priceless: It had a large, active, and fiercely loyal user base and, two, a bunch of CAM developers who still believed in SmartCAM's mission. So, a little over two years ago, a group got together and acquired the rights to SmartCAM. Calling their company SmartCAMcnc, these guys have been developing, supporting, and, now, selling this stand-alone CAM system ever since.

December 15, 2003 - EUGENE, Oregon - SmartCAMcnc today announced an agreement with UGS PLM Solutions, the product lifecycle management (PLM) subsidiary of EDS, to acquire the rights to independently develop, sell and support the SmartCAM line of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software.

“SmartCAM pioneered the industry move to desktop CAM and our research indicates a thriving customer base who wish to continue to use SmartCAM,” said Gregg Olson, president of SmartCAMcnc. “We look forward to this opportunity to build on the product’s heritage and provide manufacturers with a powerful industry-proven CAM solution.”

In addition to new software license sales, SmartCAMcnc will offer maintenance and discounts on additional seats and products to registered SmartCAM customers.
