If you are running Windows XP, go to your Start button, and then click Run, and then Type in MSCONFIG, and then click OK.

This will bring up your system configuration utility. Click on the Startup tab on the top right, and then take out the checks in the right hand column next to the things you don't want to run. These are programs that are set to start everytime you turn your computer on. If you have more than 5-10, you might have too many running. Click Apply at the bottom and then click Close. Your system will prompt you to restart. Restart the PC and when it boots back up, a windows will pop up that says your configuration utility has been used, put a check in the box on the lower left to not show the message again.
