There are two types of Stabilizer Modes on a Canon IS--Image Stabilizer--lens; 1 and 2.

1="Normal" mode where the lens will try and stabilize vertical (up and down) as well as horizontal (back and forth) motion. This is the mode you would use when you take your normal, every day type pictures.

2="Panning" mode where the lens will try to stabilize vertical (up and down) motion but not the horizontal (back and forth or left and right) motion. You would use this mode if you wanted to pan with a moving subject, for example someone on a bike. Lets say you wanted to blur the background but keep the bicyclist sharp, you would use mode #2. The lens will stabilize and shake up and down, but disregard the left to right motion.

From the Manual:
Quote:
To pan a moving subject, select MODE 2. MODE 2 corrects vibrations and shaking only in the direction at right angles to the camera's panning movement.

Mode 2 work in both Portrait and Landscape modes so it does not matter which orientation you hold your camera/lens.
